KANSAS CITY, Kan. — There are two investigations underway into Advantage Child Care Center. In addition to police, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment is investigating to determine if any state regulations may have been violated after an 11-month-old boy died at the daycare on Tuesday.
As FOX 4’s John Pepitone reported, the state cited the daycare for a training violation, and it wasn’t the only infraction. In its most recent annual licensing survey on March 19, the state found six violations relating to health practices, education, training and staff requirements.
The training violations included six worker files lacking evidence of: “Recognizing and reporting the sign of child abuse and neglect, including prevention of abusive head trauma.”
State regulations also require at least two hours of training on safe sleeping and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Three employee folders lacked that training documentation.
Five of the employee folders also failed to include: “Documentation of pediatric first aid and CPR” as required by state regulations.
A spokeswoman for the state said that when violations occur, daycares are given five days to correct the violations. In Advantage Child Care’s case, she said the proper training took place and certificates of compliance were filed by advantage on March 31 earlier this year.
Those certificates mean the facility was back in compliance with all of the state regulations. It’s current license in effect until April 30 of 2014, unless the state finds violations that would require an emergency closing.
The spokesperson added that there are no signs of that yet, but the state’s review will continue alongside the police investigation.
Advantage Child Care, licensed since 2003, did have five complaints in 2011 that were investigated. Citations were issued in three of the investigations. FOX 4’s Macradee Aegerter will have more on those records tonight on FOX 4 News at 9 and 10.
