KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City, Missouri, daycare is the focus of a state investigation after a mother claims that her child was locked in a utility closet by workers at the daycare.

The woman, who asked that her identity be concealed, told FOX 4 that she learned only this week that in May a teacher at Grow In Peace daycare locked her daughter in the utility closet full of household cleaning products, apparently as a form of discipline.

“Children are going to act out, but that’s not the appropriate way to take care of it,” said the woman.

The mother told FOX 4 that on Wednesday, Carla Hamilton – director of Grow In Peace – called and apologized for what happened to her daughter. She says that Hamilton then said that three of the daycare’s teachers were fired for putting children in locked closets.

“The fact that she rectified the situation immediately when she found out about it, I think is a great thing,” said the woman.

In a letter sent to parents, Hamilton says, “I must inform you that we have made some monumental changes to staffing, but I want to ensure you that we are here to serve you with high-quality standards and Christian values.”

The daycare is now under investigation by state officials over the incidents. Hamilton did not return FOX 4′s calls for comment.
