NEW BERLIN, Wisc. (WITI) — Experts say what a mother found in her autistic son’s juice box can happen to any food product exposed to air. What she found inside was a juice box that contained equal parts juice and mold.
Sister station WITI reports that Suzanne Hogue had no way of knowing initially that the juice could have been defective because her son Nathan cannot speak. She first poured half of the juice into a cup for him to drink before making the startling discovery.
“It took up half of the juice box and at that point it was brown, black, green. I didn’t even know what I was looking at, at first. I was so shocked when I opened it up, I had no idea what it was. It was so repulsive and it had an odor,” Hogue told WITI.
WITI’s Katrina Cravy did an online search and found what happened isn’t rare, and the problem isn’t confined to brands as much as it is packaging. This juice box was determined to have had a slight hole.
A good strategy to prevent something like this from happening to you is to smell the product and if the aroma raises suspicion, cut the box or pouch open.
