INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — A man was shot and killed at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of College Street and Crysler Avenue.

Don Edwards, who lives near the intersection, said someone in a house across the street shot into a passing van. The driver was hit and drove his vehicle into a utility pole’s guy wires and through the yard and front porch of a nearby house.

The van crashed and stopped in the side of Edwards’ yard after hitting his air conditioning unit and displacing it from its concrete base. Edwards said he heard an explosion sound and his electricity flickered on and off, so he went to investigate.

“We came out,” he said. “We had no idea what had happened. There were cars everywhere on the intersection.”

Edwards, who has lived in this neighborhood since 2007, said he has called the police multiple times about the rental house where he said the shots came from. His concern is for the safety of his children and other neighbors on his street. On Wednesday, the house had a condemned notice posted on the front door.

“We just want somewhere peaceful to raise our kids where they can go outside and play and not have to worry about fighting and neighbors that’s going to result in some violent outcome,” he said.

The aftermath of the shooting includes a mess of bricks and mortar from the neighboring porch that the driver barreled through.

Independence police have not released the name of the man killed in the shooting. The police department’s spokesperson Tom Gentry said he couldn’t confirm if an arrest has been made in the case. FOX 4 tried to contact the house’s landlord through a phone number provided by Edwards, but the call wasn’t returned.
